The most popular method of gas heating nowadays is via a wall mounted gas boiler. These boilers can be located in several different locations around your home and can be fitted into a press in your kitchen so it does not look out of place, they can also be left exposed as today's wall mounted gas boilers are easy on the eye and are also very compact in size. These gas boilers are very efficient saving you up to 20% on your gas bill and heat up your home quickly. All gas boilers fall into different categories based on their efficiency, and because most of the gas boilers installed in Ireland are manufactured in, or imported from the UK this calculation is done using the SEDBUK rating - (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK) boilers are banded from = A - G (with A being the highest) The SEDBUK efficiency of a domestic gas boiler is an approved method of representing the energy efficiency of a boiler under assumed typical operating conditions. The SEDBUK ratings are as follows - Band A = above 90% efficient, Band B = 86% - 90%, Band C = 82% - 86%, Band D = 78% - 82%, Band E = 74% - 78%, Band F = 70% - 74% and Band G = below 70%. The Irish equivalent of the SEDBUK rating is HARP - (Home-Heating Appliance Register of Performance) and this data base can be viewed at www.sei.ie/harp. MPG is fitting mostly high efficiency/condensing gas boilers in the SEDBUK/HARP bands A & B. Grants of up to €700 are available at the moment through the 'home energy savings scheme' - check out www.sei.ie for more information. Gas boilers also come in a range of different heat outputs (KW's or BTU's) to suit the size of your home and the number of radiators you have (for example, a 20 KW gas boiler's output is approximately equal to 68,200 BTU's and a boiler of that size would be ideal for an average sized home with up to 9 radiators and a 30 gallon hot water cylinder) Some of the more popular wall mounted gas boilers we fit are - VOKERA, BAXI, POTTERTON & IDEAL. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information. ** CHECK OUT OUR REDUCED PRICES ON THE PRICE LIST PAGE ** CLICK HERE !!We can design and install your entire heating system. We can advise you on the best system for your requirements, size up all your radiators and advise on their best locations. Modern systems also have zones controlled by motorised valves- upstairs zone, downstairs zone, your hot water would also be controlled, this saves money and energy. Underfloor heating is also another option (go to the section on modern trends for more information on underfloor heating) Your system could be run either by a gas or an oil boiler. We can also arrange the other trades involved in your new heating system, and for your peace of mind we only use fully qualified professionals. Please contact us for more information. If your gas boiler is over 10 years old and is starting to give you some problems, you should consider having it replaced. As boilers get older they are not as efficient as they were when new, also some safety aspects may not be up to todays standards. Grants of up to €700 are available at the moment through the 'home energy savings scheme' towards upgrading your gas boiler/heating system - check out www.sei.ie for more information. So before spending money on your old, and possibly dated gas boiler having it replaced will save you money in the long term. When getting your old gas boiler replaced with a new one consider its SEDBUK rating (for more info on the SEDBUK/HARP rating have a look at the section on wall mounted gas boilers above) MPG is replacing most old system gas boilers today with high efficiency/condensing gas boilers, these gas boilers are in SEDBUK/HARP bands A & B (ie. 86% efficient upwards) With an A or B - rated gas boiler you could save up to 20% on your heating bill. You should also consider fitting a modulating gas boiler, this gas boiler adapts to the size of your heating system and automatically increases or reduces the gas supply required at the time, therefore being even more efficient in reducing your gas bills. When we fit a new gas boiler our first job is to clean out your old system with a system restorer, this is introduced to your system a few days prior to fitting the new boiler (cleaning out a system is not always required, it will depend on the systems components, how old the system is and the condition of the system) There is no point in fitting a brand new gas boiler and allowing old corroded heating system water into the new gas boilers heat exchanger. After the new system is flushed, an inhibitor is added to the system to stop corrosion. This is the only way to replace a boiler effectively. Also included in the price for gas boiler replacement, are the heating system modifications (where required), these include - removal of the feed & expansion tank in the attic, pressurising of the heating system with mains pressure via a filling loop which incorporates a double check valve (non-return) and isolation valve, removal of the expansion pipe going into the attic space and the addition of an automatic air vent (AAV) at the highest point in the heating system, removal of the old circulating pump on the heating system and the removal of any expansion vessel, all these modifications will be carried out when and if required. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information. (MPG is a Registered Gas Installer)
You should have your gas boiler serviced every year to ensure its safe operation and to keep it as efficient as possible, if your boiler is over 10 years old you should consider having it replaced with a modern, more up to date boiler, these boilers are more economical to run and are also safer to use as they will have all the latest safety features. ** It is very important to be aware of Carbon Monoxide - it is the silent killer, how safe is your family? We can also repair your gas boiler if it fails to operate correctly. Some of the more popular models we work on are - VOKERA, POTTERTON, BAXI, IDEAL, GLOW WORM & FERROLI. A standard yearly gas boiler service should take approximately 1 hour to complete. Please contact us for more information.
#TIP - it is better to have your appliances serviced during the summer months rather than waiting till the depths of winter when you are relying on your boiler and it starts to give you trouble, it also means that if your appliance has to be isolated for a couple of days you won't be left freezing
Thermostatic radiator valves (TRV's) are fitted to radiators to effectively control the temperature output of the radiator based on the air temperature in the room. The benefits to fitting TRV's is two-fold, firstly you can control the temperature in individual rooms - so your rooms are not too hot or too cold, but just right to your preference. The second benefit is the savings your will make on your heating bills as the radiators will be on for less time but keeping your rooms at a constant set temperature. Inside the head of the TRV is a sensor that opens and closes the valve as the room heats up (the surrounding air) or cools down, on every TRV there are a number of temperature output settings which can be easily adjusted or even locked in a set position/output setting, this is useful as your settings will vary in different rooms in your home, the ideal temperature in living rooms is approx. 21°c and in bedrooms approx. 16°c. TRV's also have the advantage over a house that has the temperature set and controlled by an individual room stat, in this setting the room in which the stat is placed contols the temperature in a number of rooms, so you will find that one room has an ideal temperature but the other rooms may not. Some modern houses have several zones ie. upstairs zone, downstairs zone etc. controlled with a room stat in each zone, with TRV's fitted you effectively have as many zones as you have radiators. If you do not already have TRV's fitted they can be retro-fitted on most radiators and then you can enjoy the obvious benefits. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information.
