In these recessionary times you will find a lot of business's offering 'amazing deals' on heating appliances with misleading facts!! Offers such as 'save 45% on your gas bill' or 'gas boilers of 95% plus efficiency' or '3 years manufacturers warranty' please do not be fooled by these 'offers' the highest efficiencies available on the irish market today (OCT. 2009) are listed on the 'Home-Heating Appliance Register of Performance' data-base, you can view it from this link www.sei.ie/harp. But to save you some time here are the 3 main boiler types and the efficiency percentages - Oil condensing boiler = 97% efficient
LPG condensing boiler = 93.2% efficient
Natural gas condensing boiler = 91.5% efficient
So there are the facts about the condensing boilers and their maximum efficiency and if some company is claiming that the boiler they are selling has a higher output then there is a problem, because if a manufacturer had a boiler with a higher efficiency then it would be on the 'HARP' data-base. This being stated, everybody wants jobs done cheaper but remember 'cheaper is not always better' - 'buy cheap, buy twice' so before you decide to install a new boiler do some research about the boiler you are getting and also do some research on the installer, a lot of these 'amazing deals' you will find are from installers who are Not fully qualified, Not insured, Not registered gas installers and do not know enough about the product they are fitting for the all important After-sales service, which you will find when it breaks down is vital. It is better to spend your hard earned cash on a recognised make of boiler than one that is not well known even if it means spending a few hundred euros extra, the reason a lot of these cheaper deals are around is because companies are sourcing boilers from foreign countries that manufacture them for a lot cheaper than known brands and the problem does not end there, when it breaks down spare parts are not readily available when you need the boiler fixed in the middle of winter.
In relation to saving money on your gas bill, by fitting a condensing boiler you will save on your gas bill but not by 45% with the boiler alone, you could achieve up to 30-35% savings on your gas bill by fitting the condensing gas boiler and upgrading your heating controls, more information on this can be found in the section Heating Upgrade Options
In relation to the claims of years of warranty, please read the small print with the boiler manufacturer's instructions, you will find like many insurance policys that many rules apply and have to be adhered to such as registering the appliance, fitting it to their specification, getting it serviced by the manufacturer etc. to achieve the extended warranty periods.
