Upgrading to a high efficiency gas boiler makes very good sense to reduce your gas bill (approximately 20%) but a gas boiler alone will not maximise the savings you could make, a few more upgrades can add up to a saving of approximately 30 - 35% on your gas bill. There are several ways of doing these upgrades but for minimum distruption and working with what is already in place - (that means - no taking up floorboards, taking up carpets, moving furniture, separating pipework or chasing walls/floors, which may have to be done to meet the requirements for the SEI grant) an option would be to fit a 7-day programmer on your boiler, thermostatic radiator valves and to fit hot water temperature control via a motorised valve and a cylinder stat, you could also replace your existing hot water cylinder to a pre-insulated cylinder which would keep the water inside hotter for longer. What you would have then is an efficient gas boiler that would only be on when needed, temperature control in each room and your hot water controled at the ideal stored temperature of 60-65 degrees celsius. If you don't have controls like these fitted you probably have rooms that are too hot, hot water that is dangerously too hot and a boiler that is constantly on, burning a lot of gas and in turn burning your hard earned cash.
