Hot Water Cylinders

We can replace your old hot water cylinder with a new pre-insulated cylinder, this insulation is about 30mm thick and it keeps the water inside hotter for longer (take a look at some of the pre-insulated cylinders in the gallery) We can also increase the size of your hot water cylinder if required - for example, if you have a shower booster pump you may find you run out of hot water occasionally, this is because when you have a shower with a booster pump you use around 10-15 liters of water per minute and at least half of this is hot water - the average cylinder's capacity is only 26 gallons or approximately 117 liters. We can replace an old burnt-out immersion heater in your existing cylinder or fit an immersion heater in a cylinder that does not have one fitted already. We could also install a cylinder stat to give you control over the temperature of your hot water via a motorised valve, hot water should be stored between 60-65°celsius. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information.

Showers

There are 3 different types of showers - ELECTRIC SHOWER - This shower has a cold supply from your storage tank in your attic or in some cases directly off the incoming main, in both cases the shower heats up the water and pumps it out, this is an instantaneous shower and you only use what hot water you require and therefore it is very economical. This shower requires an electricial supply via a separate switch from the fuseboard.  POWER SHOWER - This shower has both a hot and cold water supply and relies on there being hot water stored in your cylinder, the shower does not heat the water, it does however boost the pressure of the water with a built in pump. This shower requires an electricial supply usually via a low voltage transformer, depending on the shower make and model. MIXER SHOWER - This shower has no pump and mixes the hot and cold water to a temperature of your choice, it relies on there being hot water stored in your hot water cylinder, this shower's pressure works on gravity - the height of your water storage tank in your attic - for example, if you have ever been on holiday abroad in a large complex and the shower had a very high water pressure, this is because the water tanks would have been on the roof of the complex, gravity - the higher the tank, the higher the pressure. If your mixer shower has poor water pressure you can have a shower booster pump fitted. Some of the more popular showers we fit are - TRITON, MIRA, INTA, GROHE, TREVI & AQUALISA. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information.

Booster Pumps

If you have a shower with poor water pressure fitting a Shower booster pump can increase the pressure in your shower up to 10 times giving you a totally invigorating shower. Booster pumps - Positive head, are usually fitted in the hot press at the base of the hot water cylinder, this is the best position for them to avoid/reduce air getting into the supply pipework to the pump. The electricial connection will also be in the hot press beside the pump via a 5 amp fused spur unit. Booster pumps can also be fitted elsewhere in your home if fitting in the hot press is not possible. If you are converting your attic, a Negative head pump may be what you require, these pumps are designed to pump the water to outlets that are above the height or level of the water in your water storage tank. These pumps are more expensive than the ordinary shower booster pumps but they are the answer to the problem of getting good pressure to a shower, a basin or a toilet in an attic conversion. Another type of booster pump is a Whole house pump, this pump is designed to boost the hot and cold water pressure in the whole house, it is a twin impeller pump that has a by-pass keeping both impellers lubricated at all times, if a pump is used to boost both hot and cold water separately and does not have a by-pass function you will find that the pump may burn-out after a few months. It is very important to select the correct pump for the purpose in which you intend it to be used. Go to the section modern trends for more information on shower booster pumps. Booster pumps also come in a wide range of different pressures from 1.5 bar - 4 bar, depending on your requirements. We fit many different pumps with the most popular being - SALAMANDER, GRUNDFOS, WATERMILL & STUART-TURNER. Please contact us for more information.

Water Storage Tanks

If you have a galvanised water storage tank in your attic we recommend you replace it with a PVC tank as soon as possible, your old galvanised tank may look ok from the outside but these tanks rot from the inside out (take a look at some of the galvanised tank pictures in the gallery) Another thing you can do when changing your tank is to have it relocated freeing up storage space in your attic (most water tanks are positioned in the middle of the attic and if you use your attic for storage this can be a pain !!) Also if you are thinking of an attic conversion in the future you could have the tank relocated so it is out of the way for your future conversion. The difference between having your tank replaced and relocated - When a tank is relocated all the pipework has to be re-routed and a suitable load-bearing base is made up for the new water storage tank (plastic water tanks have to be supported uniformly and adequately over the whole area of the base of the tank) And when a tank is replaced it stays in the original position, a new base is made and the pipework is modified to suit. The average capacity of a cold water storage tank in a 3 bedroom house is approximately 60 gallons or 270 liters. Some houses have 2 water storage tanks inter-connected and have too much water storage. If the tanks are not piped-up correctly one of the tanks can contain stagnent water, this is because the water is not getting replenished or used and it is just staying in the tank until there is an interuption in the mains water supply to the tanks and then this stagnated water will be the water you will be using to wash and brush your teeth with etc. This water can lead to an infection or a bug!!  It is important to check your tank once a year to ensure the water inside is clean and the tank is supported correctly, piped correctly and is not on the verge of bursting and causing a major problem (there is a picture of a tank with stagnent water in the gallery and also a picture of a poorly supported tank) A tank lid/cover is also a critical item to have in order to keep foreign objects out of your water supply. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas and we will arrange replacing your tank.

Water Filters

We can fit a water filter in your home that will take out the impurities in your water including chlorine, scale, sediment, scum & heavy metals such as lead, and will give you a very high quality water for all your cooking and drinking requirements. Your days of having to purchase water from the supermarket will be over! You can have a water filter tap fitted in your kitchen, usually on your draining board beside your existing kitchen tap in a chrome or white finish, the filter itself would only have to be replaced once every 6-8 months, the filters are inexpensive and we would leave it in such a way that you could replace the filter quite easily yourself (unlike some other companies who charge you a call-out fee for the replacement of the filter) Some of the more popular filter systems we install are manufactured by CALMAG & CULLIGAN. Please contact us for more information.

Water Softeners

If you live in a hard-water area, installing a water softener will give you the benefits of reduced heating bills, less maintenance on boilers, reduced bills for fabric softener and detergents, no build up of unsightly scale or scum on taps, showers, plates and glasses etc - these are all eliminated, you will wonder how you ever managed without one! - this hard-water is also what you use to wash yourself with and it can have an affect on your health, and on the condition of your hair and skin. There are 2 different types of softener we usually fit - one is a Meter controlled softener = this type adjusts itself to the amount of water usage in a household, and the other type is a Timer controlled softener = this type has a timer where the householder sets the time for the softener to go through it regeneration process. You can have a water softener fitted either inside or outside, usually it would be fitted in the press under your kitchen sink but if space was an issue the water softener can be fitted outside in a weatherproof housing (have a look at this type of install in the gallery, the housing also has enough space to store your salt for the softener, and all the pipework and the softener itself is insulated from the elements)  Have a look at some of the other pictures in the gallery relating to the affects of living in a hard-water area - take note of the amount of limescale build up in the water storage tanks, these tanks are less than 10 years old, the hot water cylinder is also filled with limescale!! We install, as well as other brands, CULLIGAN water softeners. Please contact us for more information.

Bodyjet Showers

This is pure heaven if you enjoy showering, we would usually fit a 3 bar shower booster pump in your hotpress or in a suitable location and in your shower enclosure we would fit 2 controls- 1 for a fixed shower head, and the other to control 4 adjustable bodyjets fitted to your desired height. With the separate controls you can choose to use either the jets or the shower, or both at the same time- you decide, either way you will be impressed! For this shower, increasing your hot water cylinder's storage may also be required because you may be using up to 20 liters of water per minute and at least half of this is hot water. Please contact Master Plumbing & Gas for more information.

Food Waste Disposers

We can supply and fit a food waste disposer in your kitchen sink. Waste disposers can eliminate you having to put items such as - chicken bones, fruit rinds, vegetable peelings, tea bags, food waste, coffee grounds etc. into your garbage bags/bin. Getting rid of food waste can also be a messy, smelly chore!! What's more, food waste attracts animals, birds and insects and can create unsanitary conditions around your home and the area where you keep your bins. Another reason for having a waste disposer fitted is for the savings you make by not having to put your bins out as often, and less bin tags having to be purchased (have a look at the picture of the waste disposer in the gallery) - Everything you put into your waste disposer is ground down and virtually liquefied which easily/safely runs into your drains. We fit many different makes/types of waste disposers, the most popular being  the 'In-Sink Erator'. Please contact  Master Plumbing & Gas for more information.

Hot Water Temperature Control

Your hot water should ideally be stored at a temperature of 60-65°celsius. The water needs to be heated to this temperature in order to kill any harmful bacteria present in the water system. You will have to add some cold water to it in order to use it, but if you are heating your water well above this temperature you are wasting energy and money - for example, if you heat your water well above this you probably have to add a lot of cold water to it in order to use it safely, if the water is too hot it can be very dangerous and may even scald children who may not expect the water to be so hot, water above 65°celsius can also damage the seals in your booster pump, this warning information is stated in the owners manual. Most people typically shower at a temperature of approximately 40°celsius, so by having your water stored well above the ideal temperature is very wasteful. You can control this temperature in your hot water cylinder by having temperature controls fitted - a motorised valve and a cylinder thermostat can be fitted - when the water in the cylinder reaches the set temperature the valve automatically shuts and when the water drops in temperature the valve opens again allowing the water to reach the set temperature again, in this situation your gas/oil boiler will not be constantly running, your hot water will be at a safe temperature and you will be making good savings on your energy costs. The other way of controlling the temperature in your cylinder is by checking that the thermostat in your immersion heater is set at the correct temperature. By controlling your hot water temperature you will be making big savings, please contact us for more information.
